Utopia and Ideal Theory

Utopia is a concept referring to an imagined, ideal society or community where individuals coexist harmoniously, with minimal conflict and maximum well-being for all.

Questions

1. What do you think utopia would look like? Would it have any rules? A government? A police force? A military?

2. How do you get everyone to work together? Do all people need to have the same idea of what the good life is, or can there be disagreement?

3. If everybody must share some idea of what the good life is in a utopia, which means are justified in bringing utopia about?

4. There have been many attempts at achieving utopia in the past. They all failed. Which are your favorites? Why do you think they failed?

5. How useful is the notion of utopia? What function does it serve?

6. Consider the two charts below. On the x-axis is the structure of the world. On the y-axis is the amount of justice in the world. In one chart, it is possible to go from any point and gradually increase justice until you reach the ideal state. In the other chart, this is not always possible. Which chart do you think better represents reality?

7. If the first chart represents reality, it seems clear that if we are in world D, we should keep making adjustments until we get to F. In the second chart, if we are at world D, it is not clear that we should make adjustments to go to world I. Should we still do it? Would it be better just to turn around and go to world C?

In this model, justice gradually increases as we move toward world F, then gradually decreases as we move away from it.
